Spraguealtar1Anton Szandor LaVey (born Howard Stanton Levey) founded the Church of Satan on April 30th (Walpurgisnacht) 1966. It was founded on a religious philosophy championing Satan as the symbol of personal freedom, individualism and indulgence, it being argued that this represented the true carnal nature of humanity. The philosophy behind the religion was not so much the worship of Satan (which doesn’t happen) but the rebellion against ‘God’ whose religions were considered by LaVey as impeding the progress of freedom, science and mankind throughout the ages.

One of LaVey’s main collaborators was the underground filmmaker and author, Kenneth Anger, a follower of Aleister Crowley’s ‘Thelema’ and member of the OTO. The formation of the Church of Satan and the Hollywood connections of its founders soon began to attract a number of celebrities to their ranks. Although membership lists are private, there are some celebrities who are publicly known as Satanists.

Liberace

One of the first members of the Church of Satan, the celebrity pianist recently played by Michael Douglas in the Biopic ‘Behind the Candelabra’ was a close friend of LaVey.

Sammy Davis Jr

Another celebrity who became a close friend of LaVey, Sammy Davis Jr was first introduced to Satanism at a party (or, excuse for an orgy) in the 60’s. He also starred in a Satanic Sitcom named ‘Poor Devil’ in 1973 which so impressed LaVey’s associate, Michael Aquino that Davis was offered an honorary second-degree Church of Satan membership. Davis happily accepted and invited Aquino to one of his concerts where Aquino presented him with his membership certificate and a Baphomet medallion which Davis promptly wore during the concert. He was later fully inducted into the Church of Satan and, as his friendship with LaVey strengthened, he reserved front row seats at his concerts for LaVey’s entourage and even  gave them the ‘devil horns’ salute during the shows. He also painted one fingernail to indicate his membership. His interest was such that it was considered to make him a Senior figure and Leader of the Church. However, Davis later lost interest in the Church and returned to his ‘Religion of Choice’ – Judaism although he remained friends with many of the other members of the Church.

mansfieldJayne Mansfield

The ‘blonde bombshell’ and rival to Marilyn Monroe, Mansfield visited the Church of Satan in 1966 with her boyfriend Sam Brody (a lawyer and therefore already bound for hell) and met LaVey. Probably due to in no small parts to her outstanding talents, she was awarded the title “High Priestess of San Francisco’s Church of Satan”. She became a full member of the Church and purportedly displayed her membership certificate in her bedroom (no doubt seen by hundreds of witnesses). She was not a member for long though, due to her untimely death the following year. LaVey claimed to have placed a death curse on Brody for ‘desecrating the church’. If he did, it backfired somewhat as Brody died in the same car crash as Jayne Mansfield in 1967. Incidentally, the urban legend regarding Mansfield’s decapitation seems not to be true as it was not recorded in her autopsy and the cause of her death was due to a “crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain”.

almondMarc Almond

Almond was initiated into the Church of Satan by his friend and fellow musician Boyd Rice in 1999. He wrote in his Autobiography, ‘Tainted Life’ of the influence that the Satanic Bible had upon his life saying “In an old junk shop I had picked up a battered copy of Anton LaVey’s Satanic Bible. I read it with a thrill as I recognized and acknowledged many truths about myself. Anton LaVey was, until his recent death, the founder and leader of the Church of Satan. To some he is a dangerous idealist, the enemy of Christianity; to some he is no more than a carnival showman: to others he is an artist and philosopher with a set of ideas and theories about the Satanic nature of man. It was the latter view that I subscribed to”.  In Tainted Life, Almond also describes his initiation into the Church “On the day, I hired a long black limousine for the occasion and went to the appointed place at the prearranged time. Boyd, Jeff, Peter and Rose were waiting for me – Boyd wearing his dog collar, his black beard and piercing eyes suitably Satanic. The others took a short walk into the woods while Boyd said the secret words to me in private. I was thrilled, actually half expecting lightning to strike me down, and every hair on my neck stood on end and sweat broke out on my top lip. Afterwards I was given a badge, and, lo and behold, I was then a member of the Church of Satan. Quite simple, really – no dancing naked, no bonfires, no blood sacrifice. I didn’t really feel that different – well, maybe just a little wickeder.”

Marilyn Manson

Manson (born Brian Hugh Warner), created a Shock-Rock character with a very deliberate aim to court controversy by creating associations with notorious figures such as Charles Manson and the use of shocking imagery and lyrics, all of which is more about self-publicity than any real level of wickedness. Unsurprising, therefore that he should be found amongst the list of celebrity Satanists. The current leader, Peter Gilmore, has stated in interviews that Manson is not only a card-carrying member of the Church but has also been given an honorary Priesthood. Gilmore also said of him “If asked about our philosophies he can explain it. The interesting thing is when his first album came out the two of us met on a panel that we were doing about racism in music that was being sponsored by Seconds Magazine. Nobody knew who Brian Warner was at that point, and he came up to me and gave me a CD and he was all in costume. But he said “I heard about you and I wanted to meet you,” so we moved aside and talked for a little while and I learned he really did understand Satanism. I told Anton LaVey that this guy was pretty smart and this gimmick is going to do well; it’s clever. He’s using this serial killer and Hollywood star combination, and he’s a smart guy and creating his own persona that is probably going to be successful. It took off immediately, and when Marilyn Manson was out on tour in California he asked if he could meet Anton LaVey and he was impressed. He is a really sweet and sincere guy, which has nothing to do with what all of the world sees in just his act and his art”.

The author would like to state that he is not a Satanist but has no problem with people who are. Or not. Whatever – if you’re not harming others; enjoy yourselves 🙂

So much ignorance… I have read many articles on the church of Satan website. Satanists DON’T believe in Satan, nor do they believe in God. For Satanists, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism. They condemn animal sacrifice, paedophilia, murder and any other severe crimes. They promote treating others the way they treat you, as long as when you seek revenge you do so within reasonable and legal limits. They support all kinds of sexuality apart from that involving children and animals. They support the theory of evolution and are against rape and forcing beliefs onto others. Do some research please.

    1. satanist dont believe in satan…that is the most idiotic statement ever!

    2. you’ve been reading the wrong books sweety or you’re reading them upside down?

You’re a servant of satan if you believe that SATANIST DON”T BELIEVE IN SATAN> only a moron would deny that fact> PERHAPS YOU ARE A DEMON YOURSELF>

  4. It doesn’t matter if you believe in Lucifer or not. If you call yourself a Satanist you are indorsing all the rubbish it stands for, described in the Bible. There’s no two ways about it.

Would you use the same excuse about Nazism? “I don’t want to kill Jews. I just like to feel poweful when marching around in my SS-uniform” ?

It’s so stupid I can hardly believe it.

    Satan STANDS for something.

    1. That’s ignorant

  5. “Satanists DON’T believe in Satan”

Yawn. Heard it all before. Such stupid reasoning. If you don’t believe in satan then don’t call yourself a Satanist.

    1. Satanist make this claim to avoid recognizing the bible truth or better said God itself, because recognizing Satan’s existence would validate Bible truth, therefore they shift their belief to what they claim is in human/man’s nature and will and therefore keeping secret satan’s true origins.

    2. Your fear of Satan and the damnation of your soul is so obvious through your feigned nonchalance and your screen name.

BTW, the reasoning is actually quite sensible. Satanism wasn’t codified as a religious doctrine until 1966, and it involves no “worship” of any external deities, God, Satan, or anything in between. “Satan” is merely an archetype for mankind’s true, carnal nature, the one that Man insists on suppressing by establishing religions that specifically make carnality “evil”, even though these hypocrites are constantly running afoul of the law (e.g., televangelists, Roman Catholic priests, Southern Baptist pastors and youth group leaders, and non-denominational evangelical ministers)

There are other, “theistic” Satanists who offer their obeisance to an anthropomorphic “Satan”. Those who “worship”the converse of the Christian devil, are “Devil Worshippers”, and have no interest or involvement with the Church of Satan or the Satanic Bible.

      Rege Satanis, Hail Satan!

  6. When Jesus walked the earth, He said Satan was a murderer and a liar. Either Jesus was telling the truth or He was telling a lie and intentionally ruining the reputation of a fallen angel. Assuming there is no other being everybody knows as Satan, and the Satan referred to in this post is the same Satan jesus was talking about – then the church of Satan – whether they worship Satan or not – are converts in some sort of way. Yes? No? Or is Mr. La Vey just making use of that well-known name to achieve his own ambitions and aspirations?

    1. I’m perhaps not as familiar with the New Testament as you are but I cannot recall any passage of scripture in which Jesus refers to Satan as a murderer and liar? To which verses of the Gospels are you referring?
Personally, I think that LaVey was (he’s dead) making full use of that well-known name to achieve his own ambitions and aspirations – I fully agree with you there.

    2. Your so stupid…. In the “bible” god killed more than Satan

      1. I would thank you to refrain from insulting the author of this article. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but since we are grown-ups, we don’t resort to childish name-calling.

      2. You’re

  7. Satanism means individualism and non-conformity, not anti-religion or Black Magic. Along with promoting indulging in things that make you happy with you who are, it encourages people to see past the socio-political blinders of this generation. Satanists aren’t concerned with making anyone else’s life horrible or even influencing it in any way, we are simply out for personal peace and joy. Satan is not some omen of evil to us, he is the spirit of the universe as a whole, given a name so that our tiny human brains can understand a concept so staggeringly large. In any case, Satanism was not named for a muderous service to the so-called Devil, it was named from the adaptation from the cult of Shaitan for Chaldea, which in turn took its philosphies from worshippers of the Egyptian god Set. Again, I must stress, SATANISTS ARE NOT CONCERNED WITH HARMING ANYONE OR USURPING YOUR BELIEFS. You live your life, and we’ll live ours.

    1. quoting you back “he is the spirit of the universe as a whole” HE?

  8. pop stars are thick, full of ego and do this kind of thing to look cool, it may appeal to other stupid kids but when you grow up you know its a load of rubbish, satanism attracts the weak and lost as they think it gives them status. God help them, peace.

    1. Satanism is a common sense philosophy of life that does not proselytize. As it is frequently said, “Satanists are born, not made.” We Satanists are your neighbors, your professionals, your doctors, lawyers, police officers, corporate CEOs, university researchers and grade school teachers, among other things.

There are also plenty of people who have no influence in the world, who are marginalized and in the fringes, who prominently display their affiliation with an above-ground Satanic organization. Nevertheless, they also saw themselves in the pages of “The Satanic Bible” and live their lives accordingly.

Satanism teaches that people be accountable for themselves and their own actions. It is not a politically correct belief system or practice. It is common sense, and advocates that people live in accordance with the law. Satanists do not find anything worthwhile about condemning people for being who they are, and are accepting of all expressions of adult human sexuality except rape, slavery, child abuse or molestation or anything involving animals (children are to be honored and protected from harm, and parents are to earn, not demand, their respect).

Since “Satan” is considered “God’s adversary” (even though in the Hebrew scriptures/Old Testament the character was not an individual but a title as-satan, or the accuser, a kind of heavenly prosecuting attorney), people assume that Satanists are criminal non-conformists with a penchant for drug abuse and sex orgies. Nothing could be further from the truth.

“Responsibility for the responsible.” Satanists are not scowling glum gothic poseurs, always in black and wearing garish “magical” jewelry. We are joyous, successful and happy, as we know this is our heaven and this is our hell. Life is a gift, we are each individual miracles (think of how many couplings had to happen at precisely the right specified time for you to appear incarnate here, your parents, their parents, your great-grandparents, great-great grandparents, etc.)

You and we have beaten the odds by being here, and this is our one time to enjoy this life and to leave this planet in a condition where our children can be proud.

“Life is the great indulgence – death, the great abstinence. Therefore, make the most of life – HERE AND NOW!”

“There is no heaven of glory bright, and no hell where sinners roast. Here and now is our day of torment! Here and now is our day of joy! Here and now is our opportunity! Choose ye this day, this hour, for no redeemer liveth!”

      Hail Satan!! 🙂

    2. ” . . . satanism attracts the weak and lost as they think it gives them status . . .”

You have no idea what Satanism is about if you believe that. People join Christian megachurches to make professional connections and earn status among colleagues, for example. It is a load of rubbish but you cannot say these things among your peers or neighbors.

Satanism is merely a type of atheism that appeals to certain people’s desire for ritual and theater.

You don’t have to “join” anything to be a Satanist, as the philosophy and religion exalts the individual, especially the one who tries to maximize his or her success. No selling your soul, etc., in exchange for temporal power, Sorry to bust your bubble, but Satanism is not about those things.

Satanists are by nature strong, capable independent people, not those who are “weak” and are looking for “status.” That is absurd in contemporary America, where the public revelation of one’s affiliation with the Church of Satan or identification personally as a Satanist could have devastating social consequences..

You have a common misconception. Satanism is a mostly solitary practice and study. Weak, bullied kids who are trying to scare their superstitious bully, or angry miscreants have no place in the Church of Satan (in fact, Church administration reported a disturbed individual who turned out to have had a stockpile of weapons and ammunition who was threatening a massacre at school “in the name of Satan.”)

While Satanic greater and lesser magick may help someone master self-discipline and purge negative emotions, it is not a substitute for hard work and personal accountability.

By contrast, people often have “come to Jesus” moments at the worst times of their lives, and need the crutch of an invisible buddy who is always there to as a “personal savior.”

The weak are typically terrified of the Satanic archetype and want nothing to do with “Him.” Those who thought that their Mephistophelean or Machiavellian schemes to obtain an infusion of power from an outside source will be disappointed, and they are welcome to let the door slam them on the butt on their way out.

  9. What can the church do for me personally? I want to be rich and famous

    1. I have no idea – I am not connected with the Church or Satanism in any way. I am sure that if you check out their website and send them a query that they will respond to your question.

      1. You can find all you want on the ChurchofSatan.com website, and the resources linked to them. They will, however, NOT respond to an inquiry about how to become rich and famous, because if you direct such a question to Church headquarter’s in Hell’s Kitchen (seriously), New York, you will have already demonstrated that you don’t understand Satanism, and it is probably not the right thing for you.

    2. The only thing the Church can offer you is to suggest that you find what you enjoy and pursue that task without letting anyone interfere with you.

If, for example, if your dream is to become an attorney, then you’ll need the magical instrumentality or computer to find the university of your choice, then to proceed with the process of the LSAT. Attend school, and your magick spells will be to succeed as an undergraduate, manipulate your environment in such a way that your instructors have no alternative but to give you stellar grades and to serve as references for you.

You’ll likewise have to take the time to study, not worship, and eventually you’ll earn a degree, then you have to take a Bar Exam, then compete for a job, etc. To do all of those challenging tasks is without a doubt, “magick.”

If you have talent and you want to become a rich and famous musician or actor, then again, you have to hone your craft and find inspiration to write songs, interpret a script and give a memorable performance. To become famous involves luck, tenacity and determination. You’ll find that kind of encouragement in the pages of the Satanic Bible.

Or, you could go the Kim Kardashian route . . . In any event, there is no sacrificing the life of an animal or human to earn the approval of “Satan”, nor do you “sell your soul” except to the extent that you have to be unsentimental and ruthless to get to the top.
